AS220 CAFE,

115 Empire St., Providence, 861-9190.

The AS220 Cafe is the nearest thing to bopping over to the loft of a hip friend and raiding the fridge. The place is part coffeehouse, part wine bar, but mostly sandwich shop. In the aforementioned refrigerator-raid spirit, you can build your own sandwich. For $3.75, you can combine two fixin's, which include five cheeses and a couple of embellishments, from tomato to hummus. We found their Black Forest ham sweet and their Cajun eye round roast beef rare. Spicy-hot vegetarian chili ($2.50) is served every day, and the Cajun sausage soup ($2) is a treat. When we were there, we could gaze at Denny Moers' powerful abstractions while we ate, or check out paintings by Laura Sue Phillips in the gallery upstairs. There's plenty at AS220 to digest.
